Bear Market Bottom — More bad news does not affect the market During a bear market, bad news (from the US, or locally, or wherever) seems to be reflected in market sentiment, and a fall in prices. Once a bear market is bottoming, we will find that bad news tends to have less and less affect on the market. Question: Is this a useful way to help spot a bear market bottom? How can we measure this? If you have different ideas about a bear market bottom, then please post it in another Topic, or if you can't find one, create a New Topic like this one. Here is a startling observation last night:
Yesterday, in the US, Congress REJECTED the auto-makers request for bail-out funds. This was the final opportunity to close the deal. "The odds that GM and Chrysler will be insolvent by year's end are growing rapidly..." (AFR, page 18, Sat 13 Dec, 2008).
The experts say this caused the severe sell-off in the Aussie market after about 2pm yesterday Fri 12th (check the chart).
So, Wall Street was expecting a blood bath on the market last night (Fri 12 Dec in the US). Dow Jones Futures were expecting a fall of 324 points.
BUT, the US markets closed UP slightly.
How can this be?

With a severe bear market in place in 2020, due to the global
coronavirus pandemic, bear market bottom hunting will be the discussion
topic in the May 2020 User Group meeting/webinar. Does anyone watch the news, and find tht it might give us a heads up? Any early thoughts on
the topic can be posted in the user forum here.
